Open bomber courses reward a bag full of distance drivers. Tight, wooded courses punish it. When the gap is three feet wide and forty feet up, the player who wins is the one who can hit a repeatable line — not the one with the most plastic.
Cut the bag down. On a wooded course you'll throw your midranges and fairways far more than your speed-12 drivers, because control beats distance when the fairway is a tunnel. Carry two or three midranges you trust completely at different stabilities and you can shape almost any line the course throws at you.
Learn your straight shot cold. The most valuable throw in the woods is a flat, dead-straight midrange that holds its line and drops. Master that one shot and you'll par holes that wreck players who only know how to bomb. Add a reliable hyzer and a gentle flex line off it and you've covered most of the course.
Keep the putter simple. In the trees you'll take a lot of layup and jump-putt looks, so bag a stable putter you can throw on a line as well as putt with.
